What is a moisture barrier for flooring?

A moisture barrier is a layer of plastic sheeting or specialized coating installed between a concrete slab and flooring material to prevent moisture from rising through the ground.

A moisture barrier is a protective layer, usually made of thick polyethylene plastic or waterproof coating, laid directly on concrete slabs to stop ground moisture from moving upward into flooring materials. In Klang Valley and other Malaysian areas where humidity and ground water seepage are common, this barrier sits between the slab and the finished floor, whether that is tile, wood, vinyl, or another material.

Ground-floor units in Malaysia face persistent moisture challenges. Concrete slabs absorb water from the surrounding soil and humidity, especially during rainy seasons. Without a barrier, moisture travels through the slab and damages flooring from underneath, causing swelling, warping, mold growth, and premature failure. The barrier blocks this capillary action, keeping the slab dry and the flooring stable overhead.

Typical barriers are laid during the preparation stage before any flooring is installed. They work by creating a continuous seal over the entire slab surface. Some contractors use 6-mil or 10-mil polyethylene sheets, while others apply liquid-applied membranes that cure into a waterproof coat. The choice depends on the moisture severity in your area, the flooring type you plan to use, and local contractor standards.

For ground-floor properties, installing a moisture barrier is not optional if you want flooring to last. It is a foundational step that prevents costly replacements and protects your investment in materials and labor.
