What is stair nosing?

Stair nosing is the rounded or beveled edge trim attached to the front edge of a stair tread, serving to protect the exposed edge and improve safety and aesthetics.

The nosing is the protruding edge trim that wraps around the front of a stair tread where the step meets the riser. It creates a finished border and serves several practical functions in residential and commercial staircases.

This profile prevents the hard edge of tile, laminate, or wood flooring from chipping or breaking under foot traffic. It also provides visual definition between the tread and riser, improving safety by making step edges more visible and easier to distinguish when descending. Nosing prevents trips and creates a professional appearance at the transition point.

Nosing comes in different materials to match or complement your flooring: aluminum, stainless steel, rubber, vinyl, and wood-edged profiles. The shape varies from rounded (bullnose) to angled or squared, depending on the flooring type and aesthetic preference. Installation involves either gluing the nosing directly to the tread edge or securing it under the flooring material during installation.

In Klang Valley properties, nosing is especially important where stairs see heavy use or where multiple flooring materials meet. It is a standard detail in renovations and new builds, protecting your investment and extending the life of your staircase. Flooring contractors typically include nosing selection and installation as part of stair refinishing or new floor projects.
